MailFiler

A private utility that files financial documents from email.

MailFiler is a small personal tool. It runs on its owner's own hardware and reads its owner's own mailboxes. It is not a product, not a service, and has no users other than the person who built it.

What it does

Banks, utilities and share registries email statements and bills as PDF attachments. Those documents are easy to lose in a mailbox. Once a day, MailFiler looks for them, and saves a copy to a private storage device on the owner's home network, named and sorted so they can be found later.

How it works

• It connects to Gmail using Google's API with read-only access. It cannot send, delete, or alter mail, and does not mark anything as read.
• It only looks at messages from a fixed, hand-written list of financial institutions. Everything else is ignored and never downloaded.
• Matching PDF attachments are copied to private local storage. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
• It runs once a day on a timer, and does nothing else.

Who it's for

One person: its author. There is nothing to sign up for and no account to create. This page exists because Google requires a published application to have a home page and a privacy policy.
